About To Vision Malala

Vision Malala Trust was inspired by the news of Malala Yousafzai regaining consciousness in a nursing home in Birmingham on 16 October 2012.

A week earlier, Malala had been shot by Taliban militants in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and was later airlifted to safety while in an induced semi-comatose state. She had raised her voice for the right of girls to receive an education, despite opposition from the Taliban. Even after the assassination attempt, her extraordinary willpower enabled her to continue her studies and speak to the world about the importance of education.

Her courage deeply inspired Soumitra Ray, Founder of Vision Malala Trust, and reminded him of the last advice given to him by his mother, Mrs Manjula Ray.

Having taught English for almost 40 years, Mrs Ray strongly believed that special attention should be given to less privileged girls. She felt that without proper education, support and guidance, a girl child could be particularly vulnerable and more easily exposed to exploitation.

Inspired by his mother’s vision and Malala’s determination, Soumitra Ray formed Vision Malala Trust with a commitment to stand beside children who genuinely need support.

Our Mission

The mission of Vision Malala is to empower the girl child by providing a healthy, secure, and enriching environment that supports holistic development—physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. We strive to ensure that every girl under our care has access to education, healthcare, emotional support, and life-building skills necessary to become a confident and self-reliant individual.

Through education, mentorship, and community involvement, we aim to protect children from exploitation, child labor, and early dropout from school. By extending academic support beyond government limitations, especially for higher classes, Vision Malala works to keep girls in school and guide them toward a brighter, independent future.

Founder Speak

At Vision Malala Charitable Trust, we view education not as a welfare activity but as a long-term social investment. Since adopting the residential school for one hundred underprivileged girls in Kolkata, our focus has been on creating a stable, safe, and dignified living and learning environment—one that enables these children to remain in school, maintain good health, and develop the confidence needed to progress beyond their circumstances. All our initiatives are designed to address practical gaps where government support alone is insufficient.

Our current and future priorities require sustained funding to improve infrastructure, expand habitable space, extend educational support beyond Class VIII, and strengthen healthcare and skill-building programs. As a fully volunteer-driven trust, we ensure that every contribution is utilized directly for program delivery, with no administrative overheads. We invite funders and partners to join us in building a scalable, transparent, and impactful model of residential education that empowers girls to become educated, independent, and contributing members of society.
